About Julie Byrne

Training -

Julie Byrne has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. She has trained in painting and printmaking at the Corcoran College of Art and Design and George Washington University in Washington, D.C., the city in which she resides.

Artist Statement -

Nature is the focus of the drawings and screenprints that I make. It is a world of Plants, many which I have been drawing for several years. Some are the familiar, the ‘garden variety’. . .others, the inhabitants of the local Botanical Garden. Many are from the sidewalk gardens of the city streets and there are those that I have observed in a more natural and uncultivated world.

The medium of choice for the majority of my work is colored Pencil, in addition to graphite and serigraphy. Each medium offers its own flexibility and a surprising similarity. My drawings are done in stages, and the colors are applied in layers. The surface in built through the blending and overlaying of colors. Likewise in screnprinting the process requires a similar layering of colors, as a separate screen and printing is used for each color.

Each medium offers a means to depict the complexity of design and color that continues to captivate me.
